SpeakSwell for Android is in private testing. Invited testers use their personal Google Play test link; a public Android download is not available yet. The browser app is available now.
- Sign in to Google Play with the invited Google account, open your test invitation, and install SpeakSwell.
- In Android 4.4.0 or later, open SpeakSwell and choose Continue with Google. Your free 2 hours of dictation a month start immediately; there is no key to paste. Reviewers and testers who were given an access code choose Have an access code? instead.
- Allow the microphone, then read the app’s Accessibility disclosure. Open Accessibility, choose Installed apps (or Downloaded apps), then SpeakSwell. Turn on the top switch, tap Allow, and return to the app.
- Use Try dictation, or open a text field in another app. With the keyboard visible, tap the microphone to record, then finish to insert your words. Choose Hold to record in Settings if you prefer.
Keep Play Protect enabled. Use Google Play to update the test app. SpeakSwell installs separately from the older Whisper Dictation preview; your old app and its saved data remain on your device. Your Google Play invitation, your Google sign-in and an optional access code serve different purposes: the invitation installs the app, signing in creates your account and allowance, and an access code gives a tester or reviewer Pro access. Future SpeakSwell updates keep your saved words, snippets, and history.
Your account, plan and allowance
Open Settings → Account to see your plan and how much of this month’s 2 hours you have used. The allowance renews on the first day of each month (UTC). If you run out, the microphone says so and keeps your recording; upgrade to Pro, or retry after the allowance renews. See pricing for what Free and Pro include.
- Subscribed on another phone, or reinstalled? Sign in with the same Google account, then choose Restore purchases in Account.
- Cancel or change a subscription: choose Manage subscription in Account. A Google Play subscription is also under Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → SpeakSwell; a subscription bought on the web opens Stripe’s billing page. Cancelling keeps Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
- Charged but still on Free? Open Account and choose Restore purchases. If it does not clear within a few minutes, email support with the Google Play order number.
- Delete your account: Settings → Account → Delete account, or see how to delete your account. Deleting does not cancel a subscription.
Personal connections in older editions and the iPhone preview
- In Settings, choose Whisper Large V3 Turbo or Whisper Large V3.
- Choose Connect Groq → Open Groq’s API key page.
- Sign in or create a Groq account, complete its own verification steps, and create an API key.
- Return to SpeakSwell, paste the key into its connection form, and choose Verify and connect.
These personal-connection editions send audio directly to Groq using your account. Android 4.2.2 and earlier also use this setup; upgrade to use hosted beta access. Groq’s current allowance, rate limits, and any billing you enable apply separately. SpeakSwell does not include a shared key or pay those charges. You can replace a rejected key in Settings; wait and retry after a rate-limit message.
Words, shortcuts, and styles
In Words, save a preferred spelling for a name or technical term. Leave Mistaken text blank to help recognition, or paste an incorrect transcription there to replace that text with your preferred spelling next time. A voice shortcut expands an exact spoken phrase into text you save. Keep shortcut phrases distinct to avoid accidental matches.
Exact preserves literal wording. Clean adds light formatting; Polished and Excited change the writing style. Cloud formatting can send the recognized transcript to Groq. Context Assist is optional; review its disclosure before enabling it. See Privacy before enabling it.
If something doesn’t work
- No microphone bubble: check the app’s setup status, microphone permission, and Accessibility access. Open an editable field with the keyboard showing. SpeakSwell stays hidden in password and PIN fields.
- Text didn’t insert: some apps restrict insertion. Open History to recover and copy a completed transcript.
- Connection or rate-limit error: check your internet connection and the provider message. Retry the saved recording when your connection or allowance is available.
- Unexpected wording: try Exact and review preferred spellings. Read a transcript before sending it or using it for important work.
Android Settings includes Copy support diagnostics. Review the copied information before emailing it. Include the app version, phone model, and a description of what happened. Never include an API key, connection token, private recording, or unrelated personal information.
iPhone & browser
Open the web app and sign in with Google. In Safari, choose Share → Add to Home Screen → Add if you want an app icon. Sign in there with the same SpeakSwell account.
Tap Record, allow the microphone, speak, then tap Stop recording. Copy the result into another app. Keep this page open while recording; backgrounding stops capture. Text saves to your account, while audio stays in this browser on this device for retry. Clearing site data removes local audio and unsynced changes.
If microphone access is blocked, allow Microphone in the browser’s settings for this site. The web version records here and copies text; the Android floating microphone and desktop global shortcuts use their native apps. The separate experimental iPhone keyboard preview still uses a personal speech connection.
Mac
Download the Mac ZIP, unzip it, and move SpeakSwell to Applications. This preview is locally signed and is not notarized by Apple. If macOS blocks it, review the source and Apple’s guidance for opening an app before deciding whether to open it. The browser version is also available.
Open Settings and sign in to SpeakSwell with the same Google account you use on your phone. Your plan and remaining time appear in Account. Recordings stay on this Mac. Enable Save text and settings to my account to share completed text, summaries, words and shortcuts with the web app. Dictation uses that account automatically. If macOS asks to unlock a saved sign-in after an older preview, check that the prompt identifies SpeakSwell before choosing whether to allow it. Microphone and Accessibility are separate permissions.
Allow Microphone to record. Accessibility enables insertion into other apps; you can copy transcripts if insertion is unavailable. Saved spellings and shortcuts remain when updating. On Mac, you can move between apps while speaking, select a text field, then finish dictation to insert there. If no field is selected, the finished transcript waits for your next field click.
Writing styles
Choose your default in Settings → Writing style, then use App-specific styles for Email, Messages, Work chat and AI Prompts. Exact keeps literal speech plus your saved Words. Clean removes fillers and clear false starts. Polished refines grammar and flow. Excited adds restrained punctuation to enthusiasm you express. Casual uses lighter punctuation for short messages. In AI Prompts, choose AI Prompt deliberately to organize a longer request without answering it or adding requirements. Recognized AI apps otherwise use your saved style or default.
App recognition depends on the editor. Supported native apps and selected websites are recognized; unavailable browser addresses and unknown editors use your default. If the original field changes during processing, recover your dictation from History or the placement prompt.
Meeting and lecture notes
Open Meetings and start a recording. Review the first-use disclosure, then record a meeting, lecture or voice note. Tap Highlight to mark an important moment; tap Stop recording when finished. Transcript sections appear during recording. The summary, transcript and highlights link to saved audio. Use More to rename the recording, copy its transcript, remove saved audio, or delete it.
A dictation can run for up to one hour; a meeting can run for up to two hours. Meetings can record with the screen locked after you start recording in the app. Keep the phone powered on; force-stopping the app, restarting the phone, microphone privacy controls or another app taking the microphone can interrupt capture. An hour uses about 120 MB of local audio storage. If transcription is unavailable, your audio stays saved and Retry continues the remaining work. Android 4.3.1 adds automatic speaker labels on your phone without an extra subscription. In Transcript, tap a label to rename the speaker throughout the recording or correct that turn. Labels are estimates and may be less accurate with overlapping voices, short replies or background noise. Older recordings keep their manual labels. AI Notes is a Pro feature and needs microphone permission and a signed-in Pro account; it does not require Accessibility.
Android accounts and hosted dictation
Android 4.4.0 and later manage the speech model automatically; you never choose a model or paste a key. If SpeakSwell says your sign-in expired, open the app and sign in again; your recording is kept. Android 4.2.3 to 4.3.1 private-beta builds used an invitation instead, and an access code still works in 4.4.0 for testers and reviewers.
To adjust the bubble, open Settings → Position → Adjust bubble position. Drag it repeatedly, then choose Done to save or Cancel to restore the previous position. Android 4.4.5 and Mac 2.1.1 can use a short excerpt of the visible conversation for names and formatting when Context Assist is enabled under Settings → Privacy. Enable it once after reviewing the disclosure; it then works automatically during dictation. With Reply Assist, say an explicit instruction such as “Tell them Tuesday works.” Ordinary questions remain questions.

Use SpeakSwell in your browser
Open the web app and sign in with your existing Google account. Dictation uses your SpeakSwell plan. Meetings and AI summaries require Pro. Your text library, words, shortcuts and writing settings save to your account. Recordings stay on the browser and device where you made them.
To bring existing Mac text across, install a sync-capable Mac update and enable Settings → Account → Save text and settings to my account. Keep the Mac app open while the first sync finishes, then sign into the web app with the same account. Android and older Mac versions keep ordinary text local. Global shortcuts, insertion into other apps and local models use the desktop app.
